July 21st. Windsong went out on the morning plane and I on the afternoon one.

Amid a puff of brown dust the plane lifted from the runway and banked to the south. Below lay Coppermine, the river delta, the Arctic Ocean shoreline stretching east, and my dreams.

Don would be coming in along that shore. I hated him! Hated him for being able to go on! Hated him because I might never be able to paddle again!

I watched the tundra lakes pass below and set to the task of sorting out my emotions.

Mike, Annette, and Sienna Hart from Pelly Bay were on the same flight. They were surprised to see me. I explained what had happened and that Don was on his way to Coppermine from Cambridge. We parted company in Edmonton.

I stood at the Air Canada ticket counter, making arrangements to Winnipeg. The agent, Cliff Oatway, was very helpful and kind in arranging for an early morning flight. I knew it was most urgent that I get home. I was swelling quickly and dreadfully.

“By the way, here’s a voucher for the hotel,” he said. “I think you need to rest. The shuttle bus will be here in ten minutes.” How kind to do that for a stranger! I expressed my appreciation and turned toward the door.

“There’s something wrong,” I said before thinking.

“Like what?” he asked.

“It’s dark outside.”

“It usually is at 10:30,” he said.

“Of course, I forgot. I haven’t seen darkness for two months,” I apologized, and he laughed.
